Celebrating Resilience: A Joyous and Meaningful Event in Capas, Tarlac Commemorates the 34th Anniversary of the Mt. Pinatubo Eruption
On June 14th, the vibrant communities of Capas, Tarlac and Botolan, Zambales gathered together in a heartfelt celebration to commemorate the 34th anniversary of the historic eruption of Mt. Pinatubo. This event was more than just a remembrance of a past disaster; it was a powerful testament to resilience, renewal, and hope—a celebration of how far the communities have come since that fateful day. Held at the iconic jump-off point of the Mt. Pinatubo Crater Lake Adventure, the gathering served as a reminder of the mountain's significance—not only as a natural wonder but also as a symbol of rebirth and progress for those who call the surrounding areas home.
Highlighting unity and collective efforts in transforming tragedy into opportunity.
The event drew a diverse group of attendees, including representatives from government agencies, local officials, indigenous leaders, and community members. Notable among them were the Local Government Unit of Botolan, led by Municipal Tourism Officer Ms. Gennessy D. Villar, along with Punong Barangays from the eastern barangays of Botolan. Indigenous Peoples Mandatory Representative (IPMR) of Botolan and Capas also participated, emphasizing the importance of indigenous voices in the celebration. Representatives from the National Commission on Indigenous Peoples (NCIP), the Provincial Tourism Office, the local police, and the Philippine Army were present, highlighting the collaborative efforts that have helped transform Mt. Pinatubo from a site of destruction into a thriving hub of tourism and community development.
Emphasizing economic opportunities and cultural significance stemming from community resilience.
The Ayta community upholds a deeply rooted tradition called Pag-aatang, which is more than just presenting offerings to the mountain. It embodies a meaningful connection with the natural environment and the spirits residing within it. Through Pag-aatang, they pay respect to the spirits that inhabit their landscape, including the guardian spirit of Mount Pinatubo, Apong Namalyari. They offered a pig to seek favor and protection from these spirits. This ritual highlights the importance of maintaining harmony between the Ayta people and nature, aiming to preserve their well-being and invite blessings from the spiritual realm.
Re-opening of Mt. Pinatubo in Botolan
During the event, Ms. Gennessy Villar shared exciting news that resonated with everyone present. She announced the official reopening of the Mt. Pinatubo scheduled for June 16, 2025. Although this is exciting news, the Botolan trail remains closed due to poor road conditions, and the rainy season makes it unsuitable for the rehabilitation of the 4x4 trail. The Capas trail remains closed while the Capas LGU ensures that all new policies are implemented smoothly and as intended.
Recognizing community-driven progress and the importance of support from leaders and organizations.
The Indigenous People community expressed their heartfelt gratitude to all who have supported their development and upliftment. Their voices echoed a message of hope and unity, emphasizing the importance of community-driven progress. Special thanks were extended to key figures like Mayor Jun Omar C. Ebdane, Governor Hermogenes E. Ebdane Jr., the Department of Tourism Region 3, and NCIP Region 3, whose unwavering support has been instrumental in nurturing the growth and sustainability of the area.
